This is the time of year I am always looking to donate and give to those in need just like many of you do.  However, the charities I am interested in are to benefit the homeless and our Veterans. Some of those organizations give very little of their total donations to the homeless, those who are hungry or need housing or clothes.  I am careful where and who I give to.

Recently, I donated my personal car.  I wanted to give it to the homeless, but their organization was headquartered in Spokane, WA. and my location was out of their service area.  Instead, I donated it to Vehicles for Veterans.

Lake Oswego Giving Opportunities

The City of Lake Oswego always has great giving opportunities to brighten the holidays for others.

Project Pillowcase

200 pillowcases were made by the City of Lake Oswego staff with donated fabric.  Now these pillowcases are available to be picked up by you to fill them with basic needs along with special gifts for homeless families, seniors, children and many teenagers.  Return those filled pillowcases to City Hall by Friday, December 14.  Hopefully, the pillowcases and the items that fill the pillowcases will bring comfort to those in need.

Oregon Food Pantries

There are 250,000 residents, and approximately 100,000 of children, that request emergency food each month.  You can make a difference with your food donation at City Hall, the main Fire Station, or the Lake Oswego Library throughout December.

Toy Drive

The Lake Oswego Fire Department and the Library are accepting new toys (with no gift wrapping) to bring holiday cheer to children in need.  Toys will be shared with families throughout the local area and distributed by Tualatin Valley Elks Lodge.  Please drop off toys by Decemeber 14 at the Lake Oswego Fire Department Main Stations (300 B Avenue) or the Lake Oswego Library (706 Fourth Street).

Lake Oswego Lions Club

Coats, blankets and gloves are being collected for Hope Sparrow Service to keep the chill away.  Hope Sparrow Services will distribute those items throughout the winter to families in need in our community, especially children. Drop off lightly used, clean items at the south entrance of City Hall, 380 A Avenue, through the end of January.

#Rockin’Socks

As of today, I am personally starting a sock drive.  It will continue throughout 2019 for the homeless.  My goal is 1,000 pairs of socks in 2019.  If you want me to pick up your donation, you can send me a text at 503.804.9685 and just say #rockinsocks and your address.  I will gladly come pick them up.

Return of the Coffee Meet Ups

Also, starting the last Wednesday in January 2019, I am returning with my coffee meetups.  I will be at Ava Roasteria

Ava Roasteria – LAKE OSWEGO

It has been a really busy Spring real estate market and forgot to post that I have now been writing my blog for 10 years (originally on a different site that got lost over 7 times in cyberspace!). Who would have guessed I had that much to write about – and I’m not done yet!

Real estate is ever-changing – people are all different, houses are different, situations are different and laws and rules are always changing.

It has always been my belief that the more you know, the better decisions you can make.  Since 1978 I have been writing a newsletter – Jung’s Journal – that I send to my past clients, people I know and to certain neighborhoods in Lake Oswego.  My newsletter contains information that you won’t find here and this blog has information you won’t see in my newsletter or on my Facebook blog either.  I try to make my writings interesting and informative and change things around.

Lake Oswego Real Estate Blog Anniversary

My blog’s formal name is ALL ABOUT…..Lake Oswego Real Estate.  You may be wondering why I called my blog that and why I type the title in a certain way.

You’re probably thinking that since this blog is all about real estate and Lake Oswego thus the name. Well, that isn’t the reason at all. There was a series of children books in the 1950s (now https://lakeoswegorealestateblog.wordpress.com/collectibles) entitled “ALL ABOUT….” Each book was written about a specific and different subject; i.e. “ALL ABOUT…..Park Rangers”, “ALL ABOUT…..the Sea”, etc. Therefore, since real estate is such a vast subject with so many topics, I thought that would be a great name.

My hope over all this time was and still is to keep you informed on the latest real estate happenings in Lake Oswego, its surrounding areas and neighborhoods, writing about Oregon and national real estate trends as well. With my experience and education, I have lots to share and, hopefully, you will personally benefit from all that I have learned. In addition, Lake Oswego, Oregon is a wonderful place to live and I’d like to continue to introduce it to you through my eyes, photographs and words.

Thanks for your continued support and readership.

Lake Oswego Hazelia Dog Park

Today was National Pet Day.  While I am a bit late posting for today’s holiday, I did go to Hazelia Dog Park in Lake Oswego to check out all the dogs at play.

I had been there before but it had been quite a while and wanted to do some more checking around.  There were only a few dogs there but one of the dog owners said “you should see it on a Saturday”.

Many people have told me it is the best dog park because it has 2 separate large fenced areas for big and small dogs or as their signs say “timid/shy” and “active” dogs. There is also a good mix of grass and bark.

In addition, there is room for dogs to run and the park has play structures.  For the fur baby owners there is a sitting area, shaded areas and restrooms.  The park is nicely maintained with separate areas for small and large dogs, an area where the dogs can be rinsed off during our rainy days and lots of areas that have water to quench the dogs’ thirst.

Of all the dogs today, this cutie in the picture, came racing up to me wanting a “meet and greet”.bettyjung.com

I have been reading posts on my local NextDoor Neighborhood app, where residents have been complaining about their high water bills.

With Spring and Summer just around the corner, now might be a very good time to have a water audit performed at your home in Lake Oswego.  There could be a tiny leak, or a major one, that you are not aware of increasing the cost of your water.

One of the most important things that a homeowner can do to save water is make sure that equipment is functioning appropriately and is efficient.  The City of Lake Oswego offers free Water Audits to help citizens find ways to use less water.   Water audits are performed during the spring and summer seasons when watering yards begins.  Watering your yard is the main way that water is lost either through over watering or inefficient systems.  The Water Conversation Specialist can also help someone with understanding water efficient appliances, conservation tools and leak detection, many times over the phone.

Scheduling a Water Audit

Stay connected, water audits will start back up Spring 2018.

We have had a different than normal spring this year. Lots of rain, some flooding, some landslides and some really saturated landscapes. The snow pack looks great which means we have a better than even chance of having a good summer this year. At present, there is a tremendous amount of moisture in the soil and the extended forecast is predicting even more over the next month. Using this time to get your sprinklers up and running, your backflow preventer tested and getting your yard ready for the season is great…….  just don’t run the sprinklers yet. Save yourself a buck or two and wait until Mother Nature extracts a bit of that moisture for us as we move into summer. This is one of the best ways to get your watering issues under control before the big dry spell in July and August.

Most residents that have had an audit and followed through with some or all of the recommendations are enjoying summertime water savings exceeding 20% an more. Customers that are high water users and whose bill typically are the tier 2 or 3 are strongly encouraged to call an set up an appointment. Customers that have received an audit in previous years will not qualify for another.

If you would like to receive a notice that Water Audits are being scheduled and receive information on any new free conservation item available please sign up for the Conservation e-news subscription at www.ci.oswego.or.us/newsletter/subscriptions . Signing up will help you remember to review and implement conservation measures before the summer months arrive and water usage increases.

Schedule your Water Audits by calling Kevin McCaleb at 503.675.3747 or email (link sends e-mail) him to set up an appointment.

What is a Water Audit?

Saving money and saving water is what a water audit is all about.  During a visit to your home or business, the City’s Water Conservation Specialist, Kevin McCaleb, will assess the water using equipment both inside and outside your home.  The Water Conservation Specialist will offer suggestions to help improve the way you manage your water so you can save money and resources.

Though the Water Conservation Specialist won’t look specifically for leaks, he can generally detect if a leak exists and often it’s most likely location.  When finished, he will provide you with a copy of the recommendations to help you begin to make changes.  An audit will identify not only the problems, but solutions as well.  This service is offered to any Lake Oswego water customer for free.

Water Audits Not Performed During Rainy Months

Water audits are not performed during the rainy months because the majority of water loss and inefficiency can be found from yard watering habits and tools.

During the rainy months,or even when there is periodic rain, customers are urged to discontinue watering as it is not necessary for the health of the yard.
