Our Spring-like weather in January looks like it will continue into February.  Pre-mature signs of Spring are showing in our yards due to our unseasonal warm weather.  My forsythia, the first sign of Spring in my yard, was blooming in early January already. I think we will have an early Spring!

How many of you are still saying or writing 2017?  It is here – 2018.  Happy New Year! As I see more activities/events posted elsewhere, I will add them here.  Check back!

Month of January – Heal Month – Healthy Eating Active Living….Well in Lo! Look for the HEAL logo to support your local restaurants that offer healthy eating options.

Month of January and February – Food and coat collection drive.

January 5 – 5-7 p.m. – First Friday Art Opening. 510 Museum & ARTspac, 510 1st Street, Lake Oswego, OR 97034

January 5-6 – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Boy Scouts from Troop 230 in LO will be at the Yakima building and George’s Rogers Park next weekend ( first weekend in January). They will recycle trees and wreaths. This is their annual and only fundraiser so donations are appreciated.

January 5-17 – Art Mart. Donate artwork to benefit LO’s art community. Accepted pieces include paintings, drawings, frames, sculptures, prints, ceramics, or mixed media works.  The Arts Council of Lake Oswego will accept most any artistic creation that is in good condition.  12/27-1/15 – Artwork Drop Off. 1/5-First Friday Opening. 1/13 – Last day for accepting donations.  Write off on your 2018 donations.

January 8 – 6:30 p.m. – 12th Annual LO Reads Kickoff & Book Giveaway. Lake Oswego Library – 706 Fourth Street, Lake Oswego. Good Morning, Midnight. Bring your Lake Oswego Library card to receive a free copy of Good Morning, Midnight, thanks to the Friends of the Library. The line starts forming early and books will be handed out until they are gone. Books will be handed out beginning at 6:30pm. Book related food like trail mix, Chai tea and caribou jerky while waiting in line. 

January 9 – 7-8 p.m. Lake Theater & Cafe, 106 North State Street, Lake Oswego, OR 97034 – Pints from the Past: World War II in Oregon. Speaker Charlie Presti will examine the impact the conflict had on the economy, demographics, society, gender, and race. Topics include the Kaiser Shipyards, Vanport, war-time initiatives, women in the workforce, population movements and diversification, and Japanese internment. The lecture will be accompanied by photographs from the Oregon Historical Society’s Digital Archives.

January 12 – Lake Oswego Hikers May-August Planning Meeting. 9-11 a.m. Santiam Room. Palisades. 1500 Greentree Rd., Lake Oswego.

January 16 – 7-8 p.m. – William Stafford Birthday Celebration. An Evening of Poetry. Lake Oswego Library is located at 706 Fourth Street, Lake Oswego. For more information, contact Alicia Yokoyama at 503-534-4228 or ayokoyama@ci.oswego.or.us.

The parade features Lake Oswego’s Fire engine, an authentic Fife & Drum Band, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, classic cars and more! Patriotic Pets are welcome to join the festivities by dressing up and parading with their owners down A Avenue right behind Lake Oswego’s police cars! Dressed pets can win a prize by registering at the Animal Care Group booth in Millennium Plaza after the parade. Thank you to Animal Care Group, 3996 Douglas Way, for sponsoring this exciting event at our Star Spangled Celebration! Parade Staging begins at 9a at Lake Garden Court (off Iron Mountain Boulevard). All vehicles and large groups MUST preregister with the Parks & Recreation Department to participate in the parade. Space is limited so please limit participation to one vehicle per family or business. Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market And Entertainment Schedule 2017

In 2016, The Lake Oswego Farmers’  Market was awarded the title of “Best” Farmers’ Market in all of the Portland Metro Area! The Lake Oswego Farmers Market received 18.5 percent of the overall vote and ranked #1.

Our Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market has an average of over 80 vendors each week.  There are a variety of superior produce, meats, nuts, cheeses, artisan breads, jams, jellies, baked goods, fresh seafood, nursery items hot foods and so much more – definitely something for everyone.

You can find the market in Millennium Plaza Park starting May 20 to October 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Celebrate Forestry

On May 20, the market will “Celebrate Forestry”.  Watch a tree pruning demonstration, chat with an arborist, receive a free tree seedling and more.  Kids can spin the prize wheel or get their face painted.

Lake Oswego Movies In The Park 2016

Our Summer has heated up lately and with 4th of July just around the corner, Movies In The Park in Lake Oswego will also be starting soon.

Here is the schedule for 2016 for Millennium Plaza Park.  All movies start between 8:30-9 p.m.  Low sand chairs, blankets and pillows are suggested to enjoy a relaxing night under the stars.  Popcorn and other treats are available for purchase.

July 2
• Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold a community barbecue from 1-7 p.m. on Saturday at George Rogers Park, 611 S. State St. in Lake Oswego. The menu includes barbecue chicken, cole slaw, beans and role for $10 ,and sodas and water for $1. Proceeds will be used to support VFW programs in the community. Presale tickets are available by emailing lovfw12140@gmail.com or calling 971-227-4139.

July 3
• The Lake Corporation, in partnership with the City of Lake Oswego and the Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce, will present ski and wakeboarding exhibitions from 8:30 a.m.- 3 p.m. Sunday on Lakewood Bay. The action is visible from Millennium Plaza Park (200 First St.) or Sundeleaf Plaza (120 S. State St.) and other venues around the bay. At 5 p.m., the organizations will present the Portland Waterski Spectacular on Lakewood Bay. Bring lawn chairs and picnics.
• The Millennium Concert Band, under the direction of Dale Cleland, will present a patriotic concert and tribute to veterans at 7 p.m. Sunday at Millennium Plaza Park (200 First St., Lake Oswego). The event includes the presentation of colors by the Lake Oswego Honor Guard and a special tribute to veterans. Bring lawn chairs and picnics.

July 4
• The Lake Oswego Lions Club Pancake Breakfast will be held from 7 a.m.–noon Monday at George Rogers Park (611 S. State St., Lake Oswego). The event is the largest fundraiser for the Lions Club; proceeds are used to support a number of charitable organizations, including Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, Boy Scouts of America, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Gales Creek Diabetes Camp Foundation and others. Enjoy music from 8:30–10:30 a.m. Cost is $8 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. Menu includes regular and gluten-free pancakes, sausage, juice, milk or coffee. The Lions will be collecting donations of used eye glasses, hearing aids and cell phones at the breakfast as a means to “fulfill our promise to Helen Keller to be Knights of Blindness,” says Lions Club member Dean Surface.

• Parade participants should begin lining up for the Star Spangled Parade down A Avenue in Lake Oswego at 9 a.m. Monday. The staging area is located on Lake Garden Court, off Iron Mountain Boulevard. Those wishing to ride in vehicles or floats or as a team, club or special interest group are asked to register with the Parks & Recreation Department by calling 503-675-3985 or emailing jinglis@ci.oswego.or.us.

• Lake Oswego’s Star Spangled Parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday and ends at Millennium Plaza Park, where festivities will continue until 1:30 p.m. Among the highlights: a pie-eating contest, with registration at 11 a.m. for the noon contest, live music and more.

• Lake Oswego’s fireworks display begins at dusk — approximately 9:45 p.m. Monday — over Oswego Lake. Lake Grove Swim Park is a great venue for watching the display, but many roads will close around the lake at 7 p.m. For details, call the LOPD at 503-635-0250.

Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market and Entertainment Schedule

Just around the corner is the opening of our Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market, which has been voted recently as the “best” by market goers.

Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market

Opening day is May 14 and runs through October 8, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Millennium Plaza Park in downtown lake Oswego.

Our Farmers’ Market has 80 vendors each week with a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, cheeses, artisan baked goods, jellies, seafood and nursery items.
