Lake Oswego Real Estate Landslides

Granted we are still enjoying summer here in Lake Oswego. But in the near future our rain will begin and, there will at times, also be heavy rain showers.

With that there will be falling trees due to all the water in the ground. Over the last several years, there have been extreme landslides resulting in damage in parts of West Portland, West Linn, Lake Oswego and along freeways, etc.

In 2009, I read an interesting post about potential landslides in the Lake Oswego and Dunthorpe areas. Although the article was written a while back, it doesn’t negate the hazards of a landslide. In addition, the home mentioned has since been demolished.

The author of the article stated in part: “a bunch of rich people decided to build million dollar homes on some pretty unstable terrain”. And most of these homes do not have landslide insurance. In fact most insurance companies classify this as “an act of God” and don’t cover landslides. Even more interesting is that Lake Oswego is no stranger to landslides, but people still continue to build in some pretty risky areas.”

Buying A Home In A Landslide Area

When purchasing a home, there are many things to consider as an example, additional inspections, surveys, etc. landslide maps, and determining the history of the property and area as to the potential of a landslide. In addition, some other things you may also want to check is if the ground has been altered, whether landscape changes have been made, and if there’s been any intrusion of water. The City of Lake Oswego has a map showing landslide risk.  This is a recent map from 2013.
